Michael Jackson (1958-2009)
Michael Jackson's biggest public appearance in Hollywood, next to getting his star on the Walk of Fame in November 1984, took place in 1992, right across the street from the Hollywood Wax Museum. Now, fans can remember the King of Pop by viewing a commemorative display inside the Guinness World Records Museum of Hollywood.
Just before the Dangerous tour, Jackson was honored for breaking three Guinness World Records: Most Grammy Awards Won in One Year (1984, eight), Biggest Selling Album Ever (Thriller, 109 million sold since 1982) and Highest Annual Earnings Ever for a Pop Star (1989, $125 million for the Bad World Tour).
He toured the Wax Museum with four bodyguards and his agent and said he was flattered by his wax look-alike displayed in the Museum. However, his favorite figure was Roddy McDowell as Cornelius from the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. So, what happened next? Our Managing Partner gave him the figure!
Our staff spent about five hours with the star as thousands of fans crowded a closed-down Hollywood Boulevard to see him. That day, we were given five of Jackson's Gold Records and Cassettes. They have been on display inside the museum ever since with a video highlight reel of his accomplishments and a wax figure of him wearing a replica of his costume from Bad. Since his death, a case of artifacts has been added to the display as a tribute to the legendary performer.
"We'll never forget Michael Jackson's personal grace and the great appreciation he showed for everything at our museums," said Tej Sundher, partner in the family business that owns the Guinness World Records Museum and the Hollywood Wax Museum.
The Michael Jackson commemorative display is now a permanent exhibit at the Guinness World Records Museum.. The museum is located at 6764 Hollywood Boulevard, directly across the street from the Hollywood Wax Museum. Hours are seven days a week from 10 a.m. to midnight.
